Chateau de Valcombe Pastel Rose

A unique rosé made from a red and white grape variety, namely red Syrah (96%) and white Viognier (4%). These two grape types make for a great rosé with lots of freshness and suppleness.

The winemakers of the Valcombe Rose Pastel

The Château de Valcombe has belonged to the Ricome family since 1740, but it was in the 19th century that it first made its mark in the history of wine. The estate first won a prize at the "World Fair" in 1855. The Ricomes were among the first in the appellation to gamble on Syrah. Today, it accounts for sixty per cent of the estate. The magic of Valcombe lies in soils with thick layers of gravel and a limited water supply, which means that the roots of the vines have to grow up to 12 metres underground! The wines are sublime.

The grapes for this Valcombe Rose grow on poor soils covered with a thick layer of Rhone stones. A thin layer of limestone brings a surprising freshness and a mineral touch to this wine. This is an absolutely unique case within the Costiere-de-Nimes wine region. The grapes are pressed immediately after harvest. The whole bunches of Syrah and Viognier grapes are pressed together. This is followed by fermentation for about sixteen days at a controlled temperature of twelve degrees. Finally, the wine matures for three months in cement barrels.

How does the Chateau de Valcombe Pastel Rose taste?

The colour of this Valcombe Rosé is beautiful, light pink and very refined. The smell is lovely, refined with nuances of light red fruit, citrus and a touch of apricot. In the mouth, the aromas blend harmoniously and create a fine and very fresh aromatic sensation. On the palate, we note impressions of strawberry, raspberry, peach and a little exotic fruit. Freshness and tension characterise this surprisingly elegant rosé.

Temperature at 8°C. To be enjoyed as an aperitif, with spicy dishes or fruit-based desserts, sorbets. This Costières de Nîmes Pastel 2021 is a perfect rosé for hot weather! Elegant, fresh, and greedy with its small fruits, everything we like.

A FAMILY HISTORY

In 1740, when the Ricome de Surville family bought the Chateau de Valcombe, it was just a large area of bare land and a building used as a hunting lodge. Over the years and through the generations, the estate was transformed into a real agricultural and wine-producing operation. The Château itself was completed in 1860.

The first major award was given to Valcombe wines at the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Then again at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna. These awards can still be seen in the Château's tasting room.

THE PRESENT & THE "SUSTAINABLE" COMMITMENT

Dominique Ricome made this orientation towards Syrah a decisive choice when he took over from Charles in 1979. With his wife Bénédicte, they continue this demanding march towards high quality wines and develop the surface area planted with vines, which increases from 40ha to nearly 75ha, with a majority of Syrah. Valcombe's wines, until then always sold in France, began to cross the oceans to North America and Asia. Dominique took an important place among the winegrowers of the region and was one of the founders of the Appellation known today as "AOP Costières de Nîmes".

THE COMMITMENT TO "0 RESIDUE

The idea of offering wines without any chemical residues began to take shape in Basile & Nicolas' mind in 2006. They then started a new stage with the implementation of Organic Agriculture in 2009. Then began a more global reflection on the integration of the farm itself within its environment. This reflection will lead to the "High Environmental Value" certification in 2018 which accompanies the work of production in Organic Agriculture.
